A ten-month-old baby boy has died after falling from the window of a fourth-floor apartment in Vienna.
Locals described hearing a loud thud and then seeing what they thought was a doll lying on the ground outside, before realising to their horror that it was a child from the flat above.
The tragic accident happened in the Austrian capital Vienna, and medics who were quickly on the scene could only confirm that the child had died as a result of the fall from the fourth-floor window onto the pavement.
One eyewitness identified only as Johann R. Because of local privacy laws said: “I was in the cellar on the way up to my apartment when I heard a loud thud. When I got to my apartment and looked out the window I saw the boy. At first I thought it was a doll.”
Another eyewitness, a woman who lives in the flat opposite the family said: “The family, who I believe are Turkish, are very nice. I heard screams but did not realise their had been an accident. I was in the shower and as I went to leave the house at around 8, the police were there and had secured off the entrance to the house.”
Vienna police spokesman Harald Soros confirmed: “There was nothing that could be done to save the boy despite rescue attempts.”
He added: “Both parents were in the apartment. We are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
“The parents are currently not in a fit state to be interviewed.”
Police ruled out any suspicious circumstances and said the investigation was continuing.
